The winter fishing has been exceptional on Lake Monduran this year, which goes against everything I believed about impoundment barramundi. As silly as it sounds, I weighed into the idea that barra are almost like bears and feed up in autumn to hibernate through winter 🙂 This couldn’t be further from reality, as both Jake and Sam have proven on Lake Monduran over the last few winters. From May 3rd to August 16th, 2025, Jake’s clients have landed over 250 metre-plus barra!
My second session with Jake started in one of the thickest fogs he has seen on the dam – but soon turned into one of the best barra sessions I have experienced!
I kicked off the morning with this beautiful 110cm !
Followed shortly after by this beautiful 104cm specimen

Jake and Sam both provide quality tackle on their charters. Jakes preferred combo for the style of fishing we were doing was a Miller Rods Pitxh MHS with Shimano Stradic FM 3000 loaded with 30lb braid – which punches well above its weight !
